Esther Day
Esther day is an important day in the HPA community. A day coined by author John Green in tribute to his friend Esther Earl, who passed away from cancer at the age of 16 in 2010. August 3rd is a day reserved for celebrating love between family and friends- ‘A Valentine’s day for the rest of love’. The Deluminators love to celebrate this special day together each year by spreading the love and positivity to members of the public. Read on to find out more about how we have celebrated in the past.
Esther Day 2014 For our first Esther Day together, we spent the day in Darling Harbour handing out gorgeous and abundant real roses and decorated postcards with messages of love and hope for our local community. The aim of the day for us was to connect and spread love to as many strangers as possible, even attempt to make a small difference to their day. We definitely achieved this, and even managed to raise a $200 for ‘This Star Won’t Go Out’- the charity begun by Esther’s parents that works to relieve some of the financial burdens of families dealing with cancer diagnosis. Read more about it on the blog post made by one of our members after the event. Project Lily 2015 Once again, the Deluminators celebrated Esther Day on the 3rd of August, and just like last year we spent the day in Darling Harbour handing out flowers, but this year we we were giving origami lilies, handmade with love by our members, handmade paper cut bookmarks, and specially designed postcards (all for free), all with messages of love and hope for our local community. The aim of the day for us was to connect and spread love to as many strangers as possible, even attempt to make a small difference to their day. It's truly rewarding to see the smile on someone's face when they walk away from our stall, and we get to experience some beautiful interactions between loved ones. We look forward to Esther Day 2016. A blog post about this special day can be found here. Esther Day 2016 This year for Esther Day, August 3rd (though we celebrated on August 7th!) we hit the streets again, this time equipped with handmade bookmarks with positive messages of love and support, giving them out to people around Town Hall in the Sydney CBD. The bookmarks were very well received, especially around bookshops, and it was a joy to put a smile on so many faces. Esther Day is very special to The Deluminators and we're honoured to have celebrated it once again, if a little differently this year. We can't believe it's been a year since last Esther Day, how time flies! We look forward to spreading the (non-romantic) love again in 2017! We hope everyone had a wonderful Esther Day too. |
